Although she is a criminal defense attorney, Rachel Cohen, of Lafayette, feels she will be on equal footing with other women in the Jewish law course she`ll begin on Wednesday.

"People might pause — I`m not a lawyer, I`m not Orthodox," Cohen said of those interested in the course, "You Be the Judge." "I would urge people not to think that."

The six-week course for women on the Talmud, the primary text of Jewish law, will be the first course offered in Boulder from the Jewish Learning Institute. No prior knowledge of law or the Talmud is required, and though the course is intellectually rigorous, it is also accessible to anyone, said Chany Scheiner, of Chabad Lubavitch of Boulder. Scheiner is the director of the Boulder branch of the institute and will teach "You Be the Judge."

"Most people finish their Jewish education when they do their Bat or Bar Mitzvah," Scheiner said. "The study for the Bat Mitzvah is on an elementary level, and they never progress.

"When it comes to their Jewish knowledge, they stay on an elementary level," she said, even though they often have college and post-graduate degrees.

Studying the Talmud goes beyond an examination of the text. In law school, students go back and forth and dissect the law, and studying the Talmud is a similar discipline, Cohen said.

"I think anyone who likes to look at both sides of an argument, and look where it`s going, and the twists and turns of an argument, is going to like this class."

"The rabbis take an ancient system and use it as a viable option to solve modern problems," Scheiner said.

For example, Moses didn`t have to deal with disputes over cars, she said. But the question becomes, what would Moses have said if this modern circumstance was brought into his beit din, or Jewish court of law?

The Jewish Learning Institute has designed the course to be interactive and appeal to different learning types, Scheiner said. For the first session of the course, which is titled "Honor Among Thieves," Scheiner plans to assign two people to be attorneys for a case brought before the beit din about the enforceability of immoral and illegal contracts.

"In American law, it`s very clear cut," Cohen said. "You cannot enforce illegal contracts. In Talmudic law, that is not as clear."

The course is only open to women, Scheiner said, because there`s a different dynamic in a classroom of women. Cohen agreed, saying men and women have different styles of communication.

"It`s nice to be able to communicate with women and having that line of communication be similar."
